The Internets are a-buzzin’ about this new search engine Cuil, founded by various ex-Googlers. It’s got some interesting organizational features. It’s also having at least its share of launch issues.
(Incidentally, it’s also developed in Python.)
Like everyone else in the online herd, I had to try it out with all sorts of random searches. My girlfriend, Alex, has a webcomic Garanos. (It’s really awesome! Everyone should check it out.) So, naturally, I searched for ‘garanos’.
One of Cuil’s features is that it often puts images next to search results:
7. You have images beside your results. How do you pick which pictures to use?
We know from our research that people can make better and quicker decisions about relevance and quality when they can see an image from the website. We do our best to take images from Web pages that accurately reflect the content of the website. Many websites are full of images, so we use advanced algorithms to determine the best image to show the user.
These advanced algorithms in action:
Alex is going to love this.
